Top 10 Shotguns - What is the best gun for home defense? This is a great question that gets asked a lot. Shotguns are popular for home defense because they are effective, easy to use, and affordable. And there are many legends about shotguns that support their popularity.
We'll soon find out what the gun is good for in home defense. But first, you'll probably want to look at the make and model name. So, without further ado…
Top 10 Shotguns
We will talk more about these guns later. But to answer the question of what is the best gun for home defense, we need to go into a little more detail.
Best Skeet Guns On The Market Right Now
To prejudge, the best home defense shotgun is a reliable, well-made, well-seen 12-gauge shotgun from a quality company for $00.
I understand that the features are not as exciting as the firearms.. To say that a reliable, well made weapon is a good target gun is a boring answer. In order to understand why this list of four guns is a convincing list of good home defense guns, we need to understand what makes a good home defense gun. This is a list of the ideal features we want in a defensive weapon. Don't worry if your weapon is missing any of these.
In support of this article, I spoke with Tim Chandler at Justified Defensive Concepts. He is one of the top defensive gun experts. He offered valuable insight into what we wanted from a defensive weapon.
Length of pull, abbreviated LOP, is the distance from the trigger to the breech. With an LOP of less than 13 inches, the sniper can control the gun better, which helps reduce recoil. Recoil is theoretically less felt, which means you can shoot faster and faster on your target.

The next requirement is good vision. I know people think you don't need to aim a gun, but that's not true. Aim the gun, especially at home defense distances. At 15 yards my Beretta 1301 shoots 6 inch patterns. At a common household distance of 5 meters, each pellet is burned in quarter-sized clusters. You must aim the shotgun.
Bullet selection is also important. For 12 gauge ammunition, 00 ammo is standard, and Federal Flite Control 8 pellets or Hornady Critical Defense 8 pellets are the best loads if available. Both loads use proprietary cotton balls that hold pellets together for long periods of time and provide perfect terminal performance. Federal makes Flite Control loads in #1 Buckshot, which I have not personally used but are recommended by experts.
Whatever shot you choose, you expect to fire your gun and adjust those sights to hit the target.
Now that we have some standards, let's look at some good weapons for home defense. As mentioned earlier, the best home defense guns in 2021 are:
Review] Rock Island Vrbp 100, Vr60, & Vr80 Shotguns
The best handgun on the market right now is the Beretta 1301 Tactical. Adjustable sights, optic mounting rails, and adjustable length of pull hit all the right spots. And according to Tim, it has "almost Glock 19 reliability and durability," which gets pretty high marks.
The only problem with the 1301 Tactical is the price: $1,300. I know it's a lot of money. This brings us to our next recommendation, the Remington 870 Police.
The Remington 870 was the best gun and the current Police models are high quality. They're half the price of the 1301, so they're a good deal for a solid, reliable gun. If you want to check out the used gun market, you can find some great old 870s from the 80's and 90's at great prices.
But if you don't like the 870, it might be the second pump action pistol on our list.

The Mossberg 590A1 comes in a variety of finishes and options, but the basic model with good visibility and 9-round capacity can be had for $500. The action on the Mossberg may be a bit rougher than the 870 Police, but the 590A1 series is known for its reliability.
Back to semi-autos and big bucks, the Benelli M4 is a great gun. It ticks all the boxes for a well-made, easy-to-shoot gun. However, like the Beretta 1301, the Benelli is very expensive—around $1,700 new. One thing you'll notice is that semi-autos tend to be more expensive than pump-action shotguns due to their relative complexity. Also, it's more expensive than the Beretta, so the Benelli is at the bottom of my gun recommendation list.
Each of these guns will serve you well for a lifetime, perform well, and be reliable when you need them.
Finally, it is important to briefly mention the items not listed: turkey rifles, shotguns, and .410 pistols. There's a reason for this, and it's because the weapons on this list were designed specifically for combat purposes. Turkey guns are designed to kill birds. Deer Slug Guns are designed as rifles. They have their purpose, but not home defense. Also, if you mean "budget gun," we don't mean cheap gun. They offer the best value for your hard-earned money

A shotgun will absorb more rounds in a season than most rifles in a lifetime. They are pressed into the highlands, splashed in the mud in the swamps, shot and shot at the shooting range. Many people don't like the idea of spending more money than necessary for a gun that is supposed to withstand such abuse. This list of the best budget guns is for them – the hobbyists among us are here to roll around or give up our engraved pheasants to get the best shot. Here are 10 guns, plus a bonus weapon - representing excellent stats for the class. One of these is probably the best budget gun you can buy for hunting.
The Mexican-made Maverick 88 is a budget Mossberg 500 that feels redundant. It's essentially the same gun, but with a cross-bolt safety instead of the 500's superior safety. The 88 is the cheapest pump action shotgun I could find (7 bucks off a Chinese made Savage 320). For a little more than $200, you get the lock, stock and barrel, choke tube, and rim. It's black plastic, 3 inches, only 12 gauge, and weighs about 7 pounds. I shot exactly 25 seconds on the skeet range with the Model 88, which shows that they shoot where you point them, and I've seen them perform reliably on the range as well.
The most popular shotgun of all time, the 870 pump was introduced in 1987 as a budget Express version with a smoother finish and solid wood. It has a steel receiver and double-action rod to keep the shot smooth. It was sold in 3-inch, 12- or 20-inch, both hardwood and plastic, and some in .410. Again, you don't get any bling here, and the finish rusts quickly and requires maintenance, but inside is a reliable weapon that shooters have come to rely on since the 1950s.
Of The Best .410 Pump Shotguns For Every Hunter
Earlier this year, we shot one of the first 870s introduced since RemArms took over from bankrupt Remington Arms during the 2020 Duck Hunting Rifle Test. How well did the new 870 shoot? It's enough to win our Best Pump Shotgun of 2021.
If you want an Intertia semi but don't have the money for a Benelli or A5 then the Stoeger M3000 is for you. Stoger, a Turkish arms manufacturer owned by Benelli, produces similar semi-autos at much lower prices. Although you may have to sacrifice some fit and finish, the M3000 has the same lightweight, sleek lines as the Benelli, and reliable performance in the harshest of weather conditions. As Turkish semis get better and better, the Stoeger is becoming a better and better option, and at a low street price it's less than half the price of a Benelli.
Friends don't let you shoot semis with cheap gas. Unless the above Stoger is a Weatherby SA-08, they are a headache. Made in Turkey, this air rifle is slim, light and works without any issues. Lots of people own these and I've heard no complaints. The design is dated; Depending on whether you're shooting light or heavy loads, you'll have to switch between two different pistons, but aside from these minor annoyances, the SA-08 delivers reliable performance. Maybe because it's so easy - 6 ½
